Not your usual primate

Ah Meng, the orangutan, died at age 48. Her death marks the end of an era at the Singapore Zoo.

Following the news closely, Lao Gao, another primate, has expressed sadness over Ah Meng's death. His deepest condolences are expressed over the National Primates Bulletin on the front page today (9th Feb).

I am not surprised to hear that Lao Gao is saddened since he and Ah Meng share many similarities. I can think of at least six similarities.

(1) Lao Gao is a household name in Singapore.

(2) Wherever Lao Gao goes, he will be fiercely protected by many bodyguards.

(3) Wherever Lao Gao goes, he will be mobbed by the crowd.

(4) Lao Gao will occasionally sip tea and rub shoulders with royalty, movie stars and statemen.

(5) Lao Gao will obliged when citizens request to take photographs with him.

(6) Lao Gao has a personal trainer, and speaks according to prepared speeches. (I beg your pardon, Lao Gao does not talk).
Since it is not necessary to talk, he needs only to shake hands and smile in front of the national TV.

Please do not be alarmed by what Lao Gao did. He was seeking attention. Afterall, how often does Lao Gao get to witness the death of a national tourism icon in his lifetime?
