I used to like to watch fireworks display. I really do.
All the anticipation, the long wait, the jostling for a good standing location, the human squeeze human, the traffic jams, etc, all could not discourage me from watching fireworks display LIVE.
So strong was this passion in me that I once watched fireworks four times in one year. One of which I fondly remembered was an event specially organized by the tourism board to showcase fireworks imported from other countries. In 2005 or was it 2006? Cannot remember exactly when but who cares?
I had the privilege to watch fireworks display at the now defunct National Stadium. Consider that a history now. From where I was sitting for the National Day parade, I was at the top most row. It sucks because from where I was sitting, the performers were too tiny for my liking. It was fantastic because fireworks were “set off” from the extreme top of the Stadium, and this means I was within 50m. What a view and yes!! The loud boom! each time a firework was set off rocked my heart. So loud was the boom! that I covered my ears but hey, I was not complaining.
Then, there was this Roof Top Terrace, which is located at the roof of the Esplanade. Few people know of its existence and the stairs that lead to it. Sadly, as more and more people found out about this place, the rooftop was converted into some dining areas and it is “private access” only. Heck.
This year, I received at least two invitations to watch fireworks LIVE.
1) Cruise down the river onboard a Chinese Junk and watch NDP fireworks display over your head while enjoying a buffet dinner. Cost: $45 each
My comments: Do you know that getting too close to the fireworks means all the black soot will fall directly onto my head, making me dirty and perhaps creating burning sensations on the skin. How to eat with all the soot falling onto my food? Plain stupid.
2) Ascend to level 10 of NTUC Centre, a building facing the floating platform, stay inside its function room and watch NDP fireworks display. Cost: $20 each
My comments: Watching fireworks display from behind a glass window or inside an air conditioned room is ridiculous. Ambience = Minus Zero
I consider myself someone who will not pay to watch fireworks display which is free. It makes no sense to me.
Invite me to take the Singapore Flyer just to watch fireworks display and I will think you are mad.
There are many ways and many places to enjoy fireworks display. Keep your eyes open and you should be able to find a spectacular spot.
I used to like to watch fireworks display. I still do.
