H.O.T. on employability

Was having dinner with A today and the topic on foreign talents (FT) popped up.

Being relevant and staying current is the ultimate survival tool in this fast evolving society, whereby the influx of foreign talents is inevitable. Like it or not, they are here to stay, and may alter the cultural scenes here.

In a primary school or even an university, 4 out of 10 are foreigners; this is a rather substantial figure, and it significantly reduces the places left for locals school goers. From young, the top achievers of each year are mostly foreign talents and book and/or sport prizes are awarded to them, sometimes masked by “bringing glory and recognition to the school”, which in fact, little or no locals are among the top achievers.

In a fiercely competitive market, I observe that a segment of the jobs are taken up by foreign talents. Assuming the nature of the job matches the applicant, company G, which I witnessed, preferred to employ foreign talents over locals, which leaves me to deduce that these foreigners are “cheaper”. Should one day, locals decide to take a pay cut, will the jobs still go to the locals (as opposed to foreigners)?

Personally, I like this advertisement. It drives home the point to stay ahead in all aspects of life. Superior soft skills trainings are advantageous, as it aids one to excel in the work place and increase employability. As for mindsets, these have to change as well.
